# Change items in a sale

Use the cart panel to fix a sale before the customer pays: change a quantity, edit an item's choices, add a note, override a price, comp an item or take it off. This page also covers the touch shortcuts on cart lines.

## Before you start

- **Price overrides and comps need a reason.** They may also need a manager's PIN. Cashiers cannot override prices on their own by default, and managers can.
- **Items you already sent to the kitchen are locked.** On a recalled order, the lines already sent are greyed out and their actions are turned off. Only the new lines you add can be changed. To take a sent item off, see [Void a sale](https://help.omviq.com/refunds/void-a-sale/).
- **A comp is not a discount.** A comp is a manual price reduction a staff member applies to one item, with a reason. A discount is a promotion the system applies. See [Apply a discount or coupon](https://help.omviq.com/selling/apply-a-discount-or-coupon/).

## Change a quantity

- Tap **+** or **−** on the item row. The total recalculates at once. You can also type the quantity straight in.
- Hold your finger on a line for about half a second to open the quantity pad. It has quick buttons (×1, ×2, ×5, ×10, +1 and +5) and **Set** and **Add** buttons for a number you type.

## Open the item menu

Tap the three-dot menu (⋮) on an editable cart line.

| Action | What it does |
|---|---|
| **Edit / Modifiers** | Reopens the choices, such as size and toppings. |
| **Add Notes** | Adds special instructions, for example "no onions". |
| **Override Price** | Changes the price of this line. See below. |
| **Comp Item** | Marks the item complimentary. See below. |
| **Remove Item** | Takes the item off the cart. The totals recalculate. |

## Touch shortcuts on a cart line

These work on the row itself. Pressing a line's own button runs that button instead.

| Gesture | What it does |
|---|---|
| **Double-tap** | Adds one more of the same item, with the same choices, notes and price. There is no confirmation, so if you did it by accident, remove the extra unit. |
| **Single tap** | Shows or hides that line's buttons. |
| **Swipe left** | Removes the line. A message offers **Undo** for a few seconds. |
| **Swipe right** | Opens the item editor to change choices, quantity or notes. |
| **Long-press** | Opens the quantity pad. |

Scrolling the cart never changes a quantity. A quantity changes only through **+** and **−** or the quantity pad. On a product tile in the catalog, a quick double-click adds the item only once.

## Override a price

1. Add the product to the cart.
2. Tap the three-dot menu (⋮) on its row and choose **Override Price**.
3. In the dialog, choose the adjustment type: **Fixed Price**, **% Discount** or **% Markup**.
4. Enter the new price, tap a quick percentage button (5%, 10%, 15% or 20% off) or type your own percentage.
5. Choose a **reason**. It is required.
6. Enter the manager's PIN when you are asked. Overrides need authorization.
7. Confirm.

The row now shows the new price. The original price may be struck through, and the cart total and savings update.

## Comp an item

1. Tap the three-dot menu (⋮) on the row and choose **Comp Item**.
2. Choose a full or partial comp.
3. Choose a reason, for example "Manager comp" or "Customer complaint".
4. Get a manager's approval if you are asked for it.

A comp is applied straight to the item's price, on top of everything else, and promotion stacking rules do not apply to it.

## Remove an item or start over

- To remove one item, use **Remove Item** from the menu, or swipe the line left. Totals recalculate.
- To start the sale over, use **Clear Cart**. Omviq asks you to confirm. On a recalled order the control reads **Clear Cart / New Sale**. It discards only the lines you added since the recall and returns to a fresh sale. The recalled order itself is untouched.
- To set the whole sale aside for later instead, see [Hold and resume a sale](https://help.omviq.com/selling/hold-and-resume-a-sale/).

## If something goes wrong

| What you see | What to do |
|---|---|
| The comp button is greyed out | Your role does not allow comps. Ask a manager for approval, or ask for the permission to be added to your role. |
| **Override Price** asks for a manager PIN | That is normal. Get a manager to enter their PIN. If the approval dialog says it was not used in time, see [Sign in and start selling](https://help.omviq.com/getting-started/sign-in-and-start-selling/). |
| You cannot add more than a set number of a topping | The group has a maximum. A manager can raise it in the catalog settings. |
| The cart is empty after you added items | The items were voided or the cart was cleared. Check for an accidental void and add the items again. |
| **An item on this check is now sold in a different unit, so it can't be priced in the one it was rung in. Remove it, then ring it again.** | Head office changed the item's unit after you rang it. Nothing was sent. Remove the item, wait for the menu to refresh, then ring it again in the new unit. Lines already on the check keep the price they were sold at. |
| A line you rang before a unit change cannot be edited | It stays on the sale at the unit and price it was rung in. Nothing can be edited on it. |
