Split a payment and add a tip
A customer can pay one sale with more than one method, and can add a tip at the payment screen. This page shows how to take a part payment, remove a payment you took by mistake, and add a tip.
Before you start
Section titled “Before you start”- Open the checkout with Pay or Checkout. See Take a payment.
- Paying with several methods must be turned on. It is the Split payment setting under Settings → Checkout → Split. When it is off, the full amount must be paid with one method.
- Tips are set under Settings → Checkout → Tips, with the Enable tipping toggle. When tipping is off, no tip buttons appear on the payment screen.
Pay with more than one method
Section titled “Pay with more than one method”For example, a customer pays $30 with a gift card and $15.50 in cash.
- On the payment screen, choose a method, for example Cash, and enter an amount that is less than the total.
- Omviq applies the payment and keeps the sale open. A split banner shows how many payments are applied, and the remaining balance appears as the amount due.
- Choose another method for the rest, for example Card. The card is charged exactly the remainder.
- Repeat if you need to. The sale completes by itself as soon as the payments cover the full total.
Each payment shows as its own line, in the order it was taken, so you can always see how the sale was paid. The payments must add up to the sale total, and Omviq will not let you finish if they do not. If cash rounding is on, only the cash part is rounded and the card part is exact.
Undo a payment before the sale completes
Section titled “Undo a payment before the sale completes”If you took the wrong payment, or the customer wants to pay another way, you can void a payment while the sale is still open.
- Find the payment line you want to remove.
- Tap Void next to it, or tap Void Payment in the sidebar to void the most recent payment. A confirmation dialog appears.
- Confirm. The line stays on screen, struck through with a Voided badge, as a record of what was applied and reversed. It no longer counts toward the total, and the amount due updates at once.
- Take the correct payment to finish the sale.
To reverse every payment taken so far, tap Void All and confirm. The checkout goes back to its starting state.
Voiding a payment only works while the sale is still taking payments. Once a sale is fully paid, its payments are locked. To give money back after that, use a refund. See Refund or return items.
A paid sale cannot be paid again
Section titled “A paid sale cannot be paid again”Once a sale is fully paid, Omviq refuses to charge it again. The check is made on the server, not only by hiding a button, so it holds even when a second checkout is started from another screen. A completed sale shows no Pay button anywhere. Take the payments for one sale at one till at a time.
Add a tip
Section titled “Add a tip”A tip is added on the payment screen, not in the cart. The cart shows only one gratuity line once a tip has been added.
- At the checkout, tap Gratuity in the sidebar.
- Choose a preset percentage, for example 15%, 18%, 20% or 25%, or enter a custom amount.
- The tip is added to the grand total at once. Pay with any method.
With cash, choose the tip, tap Cash, enter the total including the tip and finish. With a card, choose the tip and then Card. The full amount, tip included, is charged to the card.
- The tip is part of the amount charged at payment. It is never taxed.
- It prints as its own line on the receipt, and your reports track tips for each employee and each shift.
- If you choose no tip, the sale goes ahead without one.
Your admin can set the preset percentages, allow custom amounts, set a maximum percentage, choose whether tip percentages are worked out before tax, and choose a default selection. All of that is on the Tips tab.
Automatic gratuity for large parties
Section titled “Automatic gratuity for large parties”A business can add a service charge automatically for large parties, for example 18% for six guests or more. It is set up separately on the Tips tab and works even when interactive tipping is off. It is applied during checkout without any action from you, and it prints as Service Charge or Auto-Gratuity on the receipt. A manager can remove or override it.
If something goes wrong
Section titled “If something goes wrong”| What you see | What to do |
|---|---|
| Tip buttons are missing | Tipping may be off, or you are still in the cart. Tip buttons appear on the payment screen, not in the cart. A manager can turn on Enable tipping. |
| You cannot void a payment | The sale has already completed. Payments lock once a sale is fully paid. Process a refund instead. |
| The amount due looks wrong after a void | Voided lines do not count toward the total. Read the current amount due, not the sum of every line shown. |
| A completed sale shows no way to pay it again | That is correct. A paid sale cannot be paid again. Use a refund if money has to go back. |
| Auto-gratuity was not added | The order type may not have an automatic charge set up. A manager can check the order type’s service charge rule. |
| A payment does not finish | See When a payment does not finish. |
